Shakuhachi

Born in 1984 in Aichi Prefecture, Nomura Unzan grew up surrounded by Japanese music from an early age. He started playing the shakuhachi in junior high school and studied under his father, Nomura Hōzan. During high school, his koto club was selected as an outstanding school in the Japanese music section of the National High School Cultural Festival and performed at the Tokyo National Theater. He studied under Sakata Ryōzan at Toho Gakuen College of Art and Music, and completed the college's arts, specialized and research departments. He won third place at the Tokyo Japanese Music Competition and won the Japan Society for Contemporary Music Award at the same competition. He graduated from the 55th class of the NHK Japanese Music Skills Development Association. He is a lecturer for the introductory shakuhachi course at the NHK Nagoya Cultural Center.
