Svenja has been passionate about music since childhood. She began her musical journey with the recorder, playing for over seven years in churches and at various events. During her high school and university years, she expanded her skills to include singing, keyboard, and guitar, even teaching guitar to a number of students and now today adding Shakuhachi and making it her primary instrument. In 2019, Svenja discovered the sounds of the Shakuhachi while listening to renowned artists such as Wagakki Band, Rodrigo Rodriguez, and Shawn Tairyu Head. Captivated by its unique tone, her desire to learn the instrument grew steadily over time. After more than a year of contemplation, she purchased a Shakuhachi from a local maker in Germany. Recognizing the importance of proper guidance, Svenja reached out to Tairyu Shakuhachi and began formal lessons in May 2021. By 2024, Svenja became one of the studio leaders at Tairyu Shakuhachi, specializing in teaching students across Latin America, where she currently resides. She offers online lessons in English, German, and Spanish, and is committed to sharing the beauty of this Japanese bamboo flute with a wider audience. In March 2025, Svenja will be teaching at the Encuentro Latinoamericano de Shakuhachi in Viña del Mar, Chile, where she is one of the event’s organizers. She deeply values the diverse repertoire offered in Tairyu's school and appreciates Tairyu's philosophy of helping students find their unique voice on the Shakuhachi. Svenja’s mission is to continue expanding the global community of Shakuhachi players and enthusiasts, with a special focus on Latin America. Through her teaching and collaboration, she strives to bring the art of Shakuhachi to a broader audience and foster a deeper appreciation for this beautiful instrument.
