In 1984, Jeffrey Lependorf received the venerable performing name "Koku" ("Empty Nothingness") from shakuhachi master Yoshinobu Taniguchi, while studying at the Oberlin Conservatory. In 1992, Lependorf received a Jun Shihan license from shakuhachi master Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin. A Phd in music composition from Columbia University, he has had works performed across the United States, and in Japan, Italy and Ireland. He has helped create a new repertoire of music for the shakuhachi and is currently completing his third opera, American Lit, to be premiered in New York City in 1999.
