Nakajima Kōzan began playing the piano at the age of three and was introduced to the shakuhachi when she was eleven. After graduating from the Music High School affiliated with Tokyo University of the Arts, she graduated from the Department of Traditional Japanese Music of the same university, majoring in shakuhachi. She has performed in Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and other countries. She has studied under Yuzuhara Shuzan of the Tozan School, living national treasure Nomura Hōzan, Kawamura Taizan, Yamamoto Hōzan II, Fujiwara Dōzan, Ishigaki Seizan II, and Takemura Kōmei of the Kinko-ryū. She made her major debut with the Bamboo Flute Orchestra Sony Music release “Shakuhachi Classic" in 2018. Based in Fukushima and Tokyo, she is currently studying a diverse range of shakuhachi reportoire from classical to contemporary works with Nomura Hōzan. She is an Associate Instructor of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Guild and is preparing for her Master’s examinations. She is a member of the Japan Sankyoku Society and an Instructor of the Sainone Koto and Shakuhachi School.
