Ronald Hōgetsu Pendergraft was born in Gridley, CA, August 4, 1933, and although he lived other places in his youth, he always called Gridley his hometown. He was a teacher in Fremont for over 30 years, first at Chadbourne Elementary, but spent most of his teaching years at Hopkins Jr. High in the Special Education Department. Ron was a lover of classical music, especially music from the Baroque Period. He treasured his original hand-made wooden flutes and shakuhachi. He enjoyed many hours of playing and listening to music. Ron also loved old phonographs and records from the 1930s and ‘40s, and he always maintained a large record collection. Ron’s love of shakuhachi lead him to Nomura Nyoō, who became his teacher and who gave him the name Hōgetsu. Ron was affiliated with the Nyodō-kai.
