Rafael Ryuken Cueto (b. Lima, 1979) is a Peruvian artist based in Houston, Texas, specializing in buon fresco, sculpture in Roman cement, and the chemical deposition of gold and metals on glass. He owns a 25-year-old company dedicated to architectural consultation and art installations, focusing on projects that require specialized craftsmanship and techniques from design to manufacturing. Cueto's early education was shaped by music, beginning with solfeo training from soprano Gabriela Quezada de Roque. At age 9, he joined the School Program at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música, where he learned baroque recorder and oboe. His musical curiosity later turned to traditional Andean instruments, particularly the 4-holed Lawata Quena. In 2018, Cueto began studying the Chikushinkai lineage of Yokoyama Katsuya through Shawn Tairyu Head and achieved the rank of JunShihan in 2024. He is also an ongoing student of Nezasa-ha Ohne Ha Kinpu Ryu (since 2020) and Shin-Sosa Ryu Hitoyogiri with Nick Hoko Bellando. Cueto’s playing is also influenced by a range of teachers and mentors, each contributing to his approach to traditional and contemporary musical styles. Cueto is currently working on developing a musical lexicon for the 4-hole Pre-Columbian Lawata Quena and transcribing Andean Harawi chants into shakuhachi notation.
