Born in 1949, Mende Ryūzan (Mende Takayuki) studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Wamori Kenzan, eventually attaining the rank of Dai-Shihan. He went on to study the Kinko-ryū repertoire under Yokoyama Katsuya. Although primarily interested in teaching and performance, with recitals in 1999, 2001, 2004, and 2008, Mende is alo an experienced shakuhachi maker, producing flutes under the Goku (悟空) and Ryūzan (隆山) brand names. His wife studied koto and singing with the Sawai Academy.
