Kikuchi Kōzan

Shakuhachi
Born in Shirakawa, Fukushima Prefecture, Kikuchi Kōzan studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Living National Treasure Yamamoto Hōzan. Influenced by his mother, a folk song instructor, he first began playing the shakuhachi in junior high school. He graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts, Affiliated Music High School, and the Japanese Music Department of the same university. He then completed the 55th NHK Japanese Music Skills Training. He has performed in sankyoku ensembles, sessions with non-Japanese instruments, and recordings, and has appeared on NHK Min’yō (folk song) TV and radio programs. He has also performed overseas in China, the United States, Azerbaijan, and other countries, where he has played with local musicians. He is a member of the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Association Hōzan-kai, the Japan Sankyoku Association, and the Japan Folk Song Professional Association.
