Shakuhachi

Born on February 6, 1989, in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, Katō Sōzan studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Katō Jōzan and Hirooka Wazan.
He graduated from the Graduate School of Music at Nagoya College of Music.
He received the Gold Prize, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Prize, and the Sankei Shimbun Prize at the Tozan-ryū Honkyoku National Competition in 2015 and 2018.
Sōzan performed at the Vienna International Music Festival in Austria in 2016, as well as NHK FM's "Hyakuban" and "Higaku no Hitotoki", CBC Radio's "Tsuboinorio no Kikereba Kikeruhodo", and the CBC TV special "Ise Jingu: Inochi Afururu Kamigami no Mori”.
He performs on over 150 stages a year, and participates in many TV and radio soundtracks.
He also composes new music featuring Japanese instruments, and is involved in producing various performances, mainly in his hometown in Aichi Prefecture.
