Imoto Chōzan

Shakuhachi
Born in Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture, Imoto Chōzan began studying Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Nagahiro Kōzan at the age of 10. At 15 she became the youngest student to ever take the Tozan-ryū Shihan (master's) exam. Chōzan won the Shakuhachi World Championship at the International Shakuhachi Festival held in Australia in 2008. She appeared in a series of concerts as the featured artist of the Tamba Forest International Music Festival "Schubertiade Tamba". She's performed in many media outlets, including NHK's "Utacon" and the Chinese national music program "Koraku Taiten". In addition to performing both in Japan and overseas, she is also active as a teacher. She graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts High School and as a Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi major in the Department of Japanese Music at the same university, where she also completed her Masters studies. Upon graduation, she performed for the Emperor at the Tokagakudo Hall of the Imperial Palace. She is a special lecturer at the Tozan-ryū Shakuhachi Shoyū-kai, a lecturer for the Japanese Traditional Culture Course at Human Academy, and a shakuhachi lecturer at College Kobe and at the Nanzenji Dokushu-ryu Nanzen Kyokai. Chōzan is a member of the Japan Sankyoku Association and the JSPN.
