Ashida Shōzan (Ashida Shigenobu) was born May 21, 1942. He studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Imai Buzan (a student of Ōtsu Shinzan), attaining the rank of Dai-Shihan and the title Chikurin-ken. He served twice as a member of the Tozan-ryū instructor examination committee, was the secretary for the Shiga Prefecture Branch of the Tozan-ryū, and was head of the Sennin-sha.
