Born January 7, 1906 in Tokyo, Umebayashi Shūzan (Umebayashi Masai) studied Yōzan-ryū / Muso-ryū shakuhachi under Katsuta Yōzan. He started teaching in 1959. He was Director of the Yōzan-kai and was active in the shakuhachi world for over 40 years.
