Born January 31, 1917 in Kobe City, Ōtsuka Ryodō (Ōtsuka Terao) studied Ueda-ryū shakuhachi under Hattori Yōzan and Ueda Hōdō. He started teaching in 1931. He was head of the Chikuhō Kyōkai and a member of the Ueda-ryū council. He was active in the shakuhachi world for more than 50 years.
