Born September 5, 1906 in Tottori Prefecture, Okano Kōō (Okano Kōtarō) studied Ueda-ryū shakuhachi under Kawabata Goshō. He started teaching in 1930 and was head of the Yonago Kōyūkai and the Yonago branch of the Kyochiku Zenshi Hōsan-kai. He was active in the shakuhachi world for more than 40 years.
